Education committee advances 18 higher-education appointees after chair urges timing changes

The Tennessee House Education Committee approved a consent calendar of 18 appointees to boards and higher-education positions after a brief discussion about timing and oversight. Committee members voted unanimously to advance the appointments; the clerk recorded 18 ayes, 0 nays and one present not voting.
Chairman William Slater told colleagues that all of the appointees’ terms began on 07/01/2025 and said that puts confirmations after terms are already in effect. "Their term starts on 07/01/2025. So, that means that we are several months after that appointment and after their term begins that they're even coming before this body," Slater said, urging legislative fixes to align term start dates with the session. Slater said he will carry legislation this year to address the timing.
Members accepted the consent calendar process for efficiency but discussed whether some university board nominees should appear individually before the committee in the future. The consent calendar vote was recorded in the committee minutes and the items will move to calendar and rules.
