Committee sends preschool inventory and study to finance after unanimous support

Representative Alexander told the committee HB 2129 directs a study of public preschool programs across Tennessee including voluntary, state-supported (BPK), special-education and locally funded programs; the study would inventory programs, calculate district operating costs, identify funding sources and gaps, analyze participation and unmet need, and propose policy and funding options.
Representative Alexander said the study "will also include current funding sources and amounts, state, local, federal and other grants, including analysis of gaps between funding and cost." Members widely supported the study as a necessary step before asking the state for additional preschool appropriations. The clerk reported 14 ayes and 0 nays; the bill moves to the Finance Committee for further consideration.
