The Edenton Town Council approved a motion to sign a letter of support to the U.S. Economic Development Administration for grant funds to improve electric infrastructure at the maritime industrial base in Hertford. Corey Gooden, who presented the request, said the letter would be submitted on behalf of the county and that partners in the Northeast (including Edenton and nearby towns) expect the improvements to benefit the broader industrial park.
"This is a support letter with the US EDA, on behalf of the county for securing grant funds for infrastructure improvements," Corey Gooden said during the special meeting. He told councilors staff had completed due diligence and that the applicant had a deadline within the next 30 days.
The mayor called for a motion after brief discussion; members moved and seconded, and the mayor asked for an aye vote. Councilors responded in the affirmative and the motion carried. The council recorded no opposed votes during the voice vote.
The letter targets electric improvements described as supporting maritime industrial capacity in Hertford, and staff said submitting municipal support would help the county and regional partners compete for federal EDA funding. The council did not attach additional conditions in tonight's action and directed staff to file the letter promptly.
