Commission previews comprehensive overhaul of North Platte planning and zoning code, schedules extended review

The Planning Commission received an overview July 20 of a proposed, comprehensive overhaul of the City of North Platte's planning and zoning documents, including the comprehensive plan and the zoning regulations. Staff said a committee has worked since February with consultant Marvin and Associates to prepare recommended updates; the materials will be provided to commissioners in August, with public hearings expected to begin in September.
"One of the major portions... there's about an 8 or 9 page chart that basically has all the different zoning districts, and we're recommending adding some new zoning districts like a special event district that catches things like Nebraska Land Days or the arena, the fairgrounds," the Chair said. Staff emphasized commissioners should pay attention to the zoning chart and maps because those sections contain substantive changes. The commission discussed a workshop approach and tentatively agreed to meet on August 26 at 5:00 p.m. so members can review the materials before public hearings.
Commissioners said the September meeting may be lengthy owing to the volume of material and flagged the maps and the chart as places to focus during review. Staff and the consultant will circulate executive summaries and the full documents before the August review meeting.
