Commission backs rezoning of city-acquired lots to allow affordable housing

The Planning Commission on July 20 recommended changing zoning at 606 and 608 East 5th Street from B-2 Highway Commercial to R-3 dwelling district after staff explained the city purchased the parcels through a rural community recovery program grant to remove dilapidated structures and enable affordable residential development.
"As stated by the applicant, which is the city of North Platte, the property was purchased by the city as part of the rural community recovery program grant fund, which has provided funding for the city to purchase vacant and dilapidated structures for future affordable residential development," Judy, planning staff, told the commission. Staff said approval will allow a future buyer to construct a new home supporting local housing affordability.
Commissioners clarified that two 22-foot-wide lots will be consolidated into a 44-foot-wide lot to accommodate housing. The commission closed the public hearing, moved to recommend the rezoning (file Z26-007) and approved the recommendation. Staff said the rezoning and consolidation will be forwarded to City Council for final action.
