District reports drop in disciplinary incidents, expulsions and HDP placements

Assistant Superintendent Laura Weir presented the district’s discipline and restorative-justice quarterly update, citing a drop in total incidents from 3,043 (previous period) to 2,370 (August through March). Weir said the decrease occurred at all grade levels and in a variety of locations including classrooms and bus stops, and noted a shift in tobacco-related incidents toward vaping.
Weir reported that combined expulsions and Habitual Disciplinary Problem placements decreased from 35 to 5, and that Pahrump Valley High School saw incidents fall from 742 to 362. Staff attributed the improvements to consistent application of proactive practices and to the new Student Data Analytics (SDA) dashboard that supports data monitoring and interventions. The board discussed the data and next steps for sustaining declines.
