Committee to add QR codes, web content to Veterans Memorial Park

The Orleans Veterans Committee on July 28 voted to pursue QR-code markers on park memorials that link visitors to fuller historical content and short videos.

Chair Kevin Higgins framed the idea as a way to provide more context than the small plaque text allows, saying the QR codes would "pull that information out" for visitors and could point to videos or written pages on a town-hosted site. A committee member urged the group to focus on content production — "the real work is coming up and creating that video," the member said — and recommended three-minute scripts as an attention-friendly target. Members discussed partnering with the town historical commission and Lower Cape TV to host or produce media and debated single-language versus multi-language approaches.

Committee members also emphasized practical considerations: weatherproof bronze or plexiglass QR markers, whether a temporary written page could be used while videos are produced, and finding a host location on the town website. The group asked staff to schedule a dedicated "work meeting" to produce scripts and decide whether to commission videos or begin with written content, and to return cost estimates and sample proofs at the next meeting.
