Bertha Alexander, executive director of administration, summarized legal timing and options under state law and said staff recommended recognition for meet-and-confer. "The item before council tonight is consideration of a resolution in response to a petition submitted on 04/16/2026 by the Missouri City Professional Fire Fighters Association, IAFF local 4063," she said. Deputy City Attorney Monica answered council questions about the alternatives (recognize, defer to election, or other options) and confirmed council met the statutory deadline to act.
Councilmember Brown Marshall moved to adopt the resolution recognizing the association for meet-and-confer; Councilmember Thompson seconded and the motion carried by roll call vote, 6–0. Staff noted that if council instead ordered a citywide election, that election would be held at the next regular municipal election in November 2027.
