During the public-comment period on May 14, New Pointe Estates resident James Hunt addressed the council about the proposed Sienna thoroughfare changes, saying Routes 1 and 2 would cut through established neighborhoods, create costly infrastructure needs and overload McKeever Road. Hunt asked the council to pause and determine the full impact and cost before proceeding.
Hunt said recent events — a gas-line break and an active-shooter incident in Sienna — spurred the thoroughfare review but argued that alternatives such as a local police and fire substation could better address emergency-response concerns. “I ask that routes 1 and 2 be removed,” Hunt said. He also questioned the wisdom of allowing another 10,000-plus homes in Sienna without accountability from the developer.
Council members acknowledged Hunt's concerns during the subsequent staff presentation and said the plan would be refined; the council later adopted an amendment to the thoroughfare plan but removed the McKeever Road connector. Council and staff emphasized that map changes are policy-level and that any actual street construction would return for design, funding and public hearings.
