CHP warns of months-long Highway 20 work and daily backups; emergency contingencies described

Officer Jason Lyman, public information officer for Gold Run CHP, told the council that a major multi-year project on Highway 20 is producing daily traffic backups through the summer and that crews are focusing on shorter work sections to keep contingency space available for emergencies.
“They're working on trying to add that 3rd truck lane up through there, and it's that's a 3.5 to 4 year project,” Lyman said, explaining crews are currently doing bridge and prep work and will advance in segments to allow emergency access. He described backups from Gold Run down through Rollins Lake and Adirondack areas and said the work near the CHP office temporarily limits access to the station until crews move further along the corridor.
Lyman answered questions about safety measures, rumble-strips and brake-check procedures, and said Caltrans and partner crews have cleared shoulders and vegetation to limit the risk of fire spread from vehicle incidents. He added that while a few truck fires are inevitable, improved shoulder clearing reduces the chance of wildfire spread from vehicle incidents.
What comes next: the council and staff said they will continue to relay Caltrans scheduling and work plans to the public while crews proceed with phased work over the coming weeks and years.
