Police chief reports declines in violent crime, spikes in shoplifting and stronger recruiting

Chief Jackie Gravatt delivered the North Las Vegas Police Department's annual progress report, describing crime-trend improvements and staffing and technology initiatives.
Gravatt said the department saw drops in several crime categories in 2025: a 6% decrease in homicides, 15% decrease in robbery, a 34% decrease in burglary and a 26% decrease in motor-vehicle thefts. She also noted a "60% increase in shoplifting arrests," which the department and partners have prioritized. On traffic safety she reported what she described as a 40% decrease in traffic fatalities and a 44% reduction in traffic collisions alongside a 12% increase in DUI enforcement.
The chief highlighted recruiting gains: the department's largest academy in recent history had 36 recruits last year and the current academy began with nearly 60 recruits. Gravatt also described operational upgrades including a next-generation 911 system with cloud redundancy that accepts text, photo and video, and a Craig Ranch Park initiative that places specialized patrols and UTVs to improve safety at that major park.
She credited community partnerships and targeted enforcement with recent gains and closed by inviting councilmembers to continue collaborations; the presentation was a discussion item and required no council action.
