Council to consider advancing hire of one police officer to reduce overtime, staff says

Staff told council that two sworn officers are on extended military leave and that overtime for public safety has increased significantly, creating operational strain. To mitigate overtime and staffing gaps, staff asked permission to advance-hire one of two FY27-approved officer positions and to place the request on the June 2 council agenda.
"We are asking to advance 1 of the 2 FTEs that we anticipate you would have approved...the net cost we're expecting is about 65,000," the staff member said, noting the cost can be absorbed by savings from existing vacancies. Finance staff confirmed overtime rose in April and May and pledged to provide rounding/total-dollar overtime data by the next meeting.
Council members generally indicated support for the advance hire to address safety and overtime; staff said vehicle ordering lead times mean vehicles must be ordered in advance if the position is brought forward. The request will appear on the June 2 agenda for formal council action.
