Council approves pause and restructure of Youth Advisory Committee into youth citizens academy
Summary
Council voted unanimously to pause the current Youth Advisory Committee for one year, create a youth citizens academy modeled on the adult Murphy U program and make youth eligible to serve as liaisons to boards after completing the academy.
Kayla presented a proposal to pause the existing Youth Advisory Committee for one year and restructure youth engagement into a youth citizens academy that would run six to seven weeks and include a capstone project; after completing the academy, participants would be eligible to apply to serve as liaisons on established boards.
"So again like I said, we are looking to just pause for this year... take a year to kind of structure that and see what that would look like, mimic the current Murphy U," Kayla said. Council members expressed support for pairing youth with adults on boards, suggested community-service hour tracking and recommended workshops and guest speakers to improve engagement. Councilmember (voice 10) moved to approve the restructuring and the motion passed unanimously.
The new format will require completing the youth citizens academy before youth are nominated as liaisons; staff said the academy would cover topics such as parks and recreation, finance and public safety and would culminate in a capstone that surveys peers and returns recommendations to council.
