Murphy Chamber launches signature drive to put packaged-alcohol option on November ballot

Luke Trahan, cochairman of the Murphy Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Foundation, told the council the Chamber has launched a local option petition to allow the sale of packaged alcohol at full-service liquor stores.
"Our signature deadline is July 17 to attain 2,698 signatures to add to the November ballot," Trahan said, asking residents to participate in the petition drive. He also outlined Chamber updates including a rebranding, a new website coming this Friday and a November 13 golf tournament to benefit the Chamber and its scholarship foundation.
Trahan said the Chamber has hired three people to help gather signatures and will host a kickoff event this Thursday at Backyard Murphy to answer questions and collect signatures. He noted surrounding cities have completed similar processes and framed the effort as a way to keep tax dollars local and attract visitors.
The mayor asked for the petition window, and Trahan confirmed the drive runs May 17 through July 17. The council did not take action on the petition itself at the meeting; Trahan said that after signatures are certified the council would need to approve the petition for the ballot and Collin County Commissioners Court would act at its August 17 meeting.
