Luke Trahan, co-chair of the Murphy Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Foundation, presented six scholarships to local students at the June 2 City Council meeting. "We review the candidates based on scholastics, work history, community involvement, need, and an essay component," Trahan said, and named the recipients: Macy Hatzenbuehler, Maha Rizby, Sebi Wong, Suri Lang, Diane Dequado and Rohimat Alaya Muhammad.
Trahan said the awards are funded by the business community and the city, and he specifically thanked the parks and recreation department and local donors for supporting May Days fundraising that makes the scholarships possible. A group photo followed the presentations. The recognition took place during the public comment/presentation portion of the council meeting and did not require council action.
