Manahouse awarded 50% façade grant after board debate over precedent

The Midlothian Community Development Corporation approved a façade grant for Manahouse on July 23, awarding $17,418 under the board’s existing 50/50 program cap. Norma Belcher, executive director of Manahouse, told the board the resale store has invested about $16,000 in an internal remodel and seeks exterior improvements so downtown visitors will “come in and visit other people downtown.”
Board members questioned whether changing the program now would prompt many similar requests. One member said sticking to the current guideline avoids setting a new precedence; another argued the board could later revise the policy. After discussion, a motion to fund the request at 50% (the program cap) passed by voice vote. The board noted the full ask was roughly $34,000 and that applicants own the property, which affects eligibility and implementation.
