Ileana Castillo sworn in as Long Beach Unified student board representative

Following interviews with five finalists, the board moved, seconded and unanimously approved the appointment of Ileana Castillo as the district’s student board representative.
Castillo took the oath of office at the meeting, repeating, "Yo, Ileana Castillo, juro que voy a apoyar y defender la constitución de los Estados Unidos y la constitución del estado de California..." She thanked family, teachers and mentors and said she looked forward to using the position to hold the district accountable and share student perspectives.
Trustees congratulated Castillo and encouraged her to ask questions and hold the district accountable. The appointment passed by a 5-0 vote. The student representative will have a preferential vote consistent with board practice and will receive meeting materials in advance.
