Supervisors warned infestation of glassy-winged sharpshooter is spreading; mandatory eradication under consideration

Supervisor Ferrero told the board that the glassy-winged sharpshooter is spreading into parts of District 2 and that voluntary eradication efforts are not reaching many residents. The supervisor said more than 2,000 residents have not complied with voluntary eradication measures in some neighborhoods and that the board may consider returning with an item to pursue mandatory eradication.
Ferrero said the county has relied heavily on state funding for eradication and related programs ("we're over $5,000,000 so far") and that the county is pursuing another $1 million in state grant funding to continue the work. The board indicated that staff will prepare a proposal for the board to consider mandatory eradication if voluntary measures continue to fall short.
No final decision was made at the July 28 meeting; the discussion was an update and direction to pursue further analysis and potential board action.
