Probation Services Week: county probation highlights caseloads, rehabilitation focus

Michael Boyd, Deputy Chief Probation Officer for El Dorado County, presented a Probation Services Week update to the Board of Supervisors, describing the department as operating "at the intersection of justice, behavioral health, victim services, and community service" and emphasizing its role in behavior change and community safety.

Boyd said the county supervises "more than 1,000 felony cases" and manages specialized caseloads, including domestic violence, veterans, DUI and individuals with serious behavioral-health needs. He highlighted partnerships with the courts, district attorney's office, the sheriff's department, Placerville Police Department and health and human services, and said probation's work focuses on accountability paired with opportunity to reduce recidivism: "When probation works, people change. When people change, community becomes safe."

Supervisors thanked probation staff for their work and asked questions about training, culture and case management. Boyd said the department emphasizes targeted, deliberate training and tailored interventions on a case-by-case basis. The item was informational; no action was required.
