Sonia Holt Cartwright, the Ward 2 representative on the City of Petersburg Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) advisory board, announced she will submit her resignation effective July 2026 and explained why she can no longer serve.
"I can no longer in good conscience serve in a role that that role is not honored," Cartwright said, saying she observed advisory board recommendations repeatedly overridden, reallocation of funds away from critical home repair, reduced award amounts and at least one instance in which funds were directed to an organization that did not apply. She also described flooding to her home on July 14, 2025 that city crews confirmed resulted from a tree root blockage in the city's drainage line and said her family continues to experience mold, structural cracking and health risks.
Cartwright asked the council to be accountable to residents and to honor stewardship of federal HUD dollars; the transcript records her appeal but not a direct response from council in this meeting.
