Neighbors tell Mint Hill board structure worsened runoff, raised safety and privacy concerns

Walt Counts, who lives at 6217 Elkington Lane adjacent to the disputed structure, told the board the accessory structure’s window looks over his backyard and voiced concerns about electrical and fire risks. He said satellite images show ground disturbance coinciding with the construction. Board discussion noted that the shopping-center owner behind the properties had earlier been engaged by staff and agreed to periodic clearing of a back ditch to address a source of runoff, but the board emphasized that commercial drainage is a separate town-maintenance or private-parcel issue and not dispositive of the variance standard.
