Kendall County asks TxDOT for urgent safety review after residents cite deadly crashes on State Highway 46

The Kendall County Commissioners Court voted unanimously April 28 to request that the Texas Department of Transportation perform a safety assessment and develop prioritized short‑, intermediate‑ and long‑term plans for State Highway 46 between IH‑10 and State Highway 16.
The resolution follows a string of public comments describing frequent and sometimes fatal head‑on crashes along stretches of Highway 46 West. “The facts do not just support concern. They demand it,” said Nikki Dobson, a local resident who told the court her husband reviewed TxDOT records showing roughly 550 crashes and 13 deaths over a 10‑year span on a 12‑mile stretch; she urged physical median treatments that would prevent vehicles from crossing the centerline. Other residents, including a licensed counselor who said she had provided bereavement services to many families affected by those crashes, urged the court to press for stronger mitigation.
Commissioner McCall, who is co‑sponsoring the request, said TxDOT has already implemented pavement‑marking and signage work but that a coordinated approach could move more substantial fixes forward sooner. The resolution calls for a joint meeting with TxDOT to review a current safety assessment, a short‑term prioritized action plan with preliminary designs, estimated costs and timelines, and public stakeholder meetings to solicit input.
Court members also discussed temporary measures such as targeted median barriers at the most dangerous curves and additional enforcement, and asked staff to present an amended resolution next court that explicitly references both the east and west stretches of 46 for countywide consistency. The court directed staff to transmit crash data and the adopted resolution to TxDOT and local state legislators for additional support.
The resolution (R20260428‑3) was approved 5–0. The court said follow‑up public meetings with TxDOT and other local emergency stakeholders will be scheduled as soon as practicable.
