Council hears poppy-garden update; parks to delay public opening until staff confirms bloom health
Summary
A parks presenter showed a slide package on the city’s poppy garden and urged a cautious, staff-led opening window (roughly 10 days, likely peaking over Memorial Day weekend) because plants are patchy and stressed by warm weather and low moisture.

A presenter (Speaker 4) walked the Alpine City Council through the poppy garden’s history, recent restoration work and current plant health, and said the garden will likely have a very short season this year.
"We were thinking, opening on the 20th and probably just being open for 10 days," Speaker 4 said during the slide presentation and noted the garden may peak over Memorial Day weekend. The presenter and the chair (Speaker 1) both recommended that parks staff inspect the site and delay public notice until there are enough blooms to deter harvesting of scarce plants. Speaker 1 urged a conservative approach: parks should "go up there and check on it" before posting an opening so people wouldn’t try to take buds while they are still fragile.
The presentation recounted how benches were made from reclaimed Linden Main Street trees and showed community involvement during prior restoration work. Council members flagged plant stress attributable to a warm winter and lack of moisture and discussed possible sign placement and volunteer maintenance. Presenter (Speaker 4) said in 2022 the garden was closed for the year due to weather; this season is doing better than 2022 but still smaller than peak years.
The council did not take a formal vote to set an opening date. Instead, members directed parks staff to monitor the site and post public opening information once staff judge bloom abundance is sufficient.
