City expands composting and food‑recovery partnerships; first week yields over 1,000 pounds of compost

Assistant Manager Laura Ish described food‑waste partnerships that repurpose commercial donations: the convention center partners with Pete's Garden to repackage donated food for families (the city reported more than 2,200 pounds donated this year), and Catholic Charities routes produce that is too close to expiration to the Deanna Rose Farmstead for animal feed, reducing landfill disposal. Staff said the city will explore expanding composting into additional city buildings if external funding is available.
