Overland Park lays out "World Cup Ready Framework" and summer event plan

"So we are very excited to provide this briefing," staff presenter Kate said as she opened the presentation; she said the briefing would cover administrative readiness, infrastructure and public-safety coordination across departments.
Staff described a timeline of activations and community events tied to match dates that include downtown activations on June 16 and July 11, a June 19 celebration at the Shields Soccer Complex, Prairie Fire involvement on June 25 and July 19, a Clock Tower Landing ribbon-cutting on June 5 at 5:30 p.m., and a farmer's market beginning June 6. Staff also emphasized that the city is asking organizers of events under 1,000 attendees to submit special-event permit applications (staff referenced an earlier deadline of March 27) so resources can be allocated and public-safety coverage provided.
Kate told the council the city will centralize World Cup information on a new city website scheduled to launch April 1 and called out translation features and a "special edition" with expanded World Cup operational guidance and brand-activation materials for small businesses. Next steps, according to staff, include continued cross-departmental coordination to process permits and refine event logistics ahead of the match slate.
