The Rosenberg City Council approved an ordinance to increase the over-65 homestead property-tax exemption from $85,000 to $100,000 for tax year 2026.
A city staff recitation of recent meetings said the residential homestead exemption remains at the 20% statutory maximum and that council had discussed raising the over-65 exemption; staff estimated the change would reduce property-tax revenues by about $120,000. The staff member summarized the prior discussions on 05/26/2026 and 06/16/2026 and noted the city must adopt amendments in time to file with Fort Bend County by July 1.
Councilmember Hector moved to approve "ordinance number 20 20 six-thirty 2" to effect the change; the motion was seconded and the mayor announced a voice vote. "The ayes have it. 6 to 0," the mayor said after the vote.
Mayor Benton framed the action as targeted relief for homeowners on fixed incomes: "We're gonna get a little extra tax relief right here in this vote," he said. The ordinance text as presented increases the qualifying exemption amount for residents age 65 and older from $85,000 to $100,000.
The council took formal action before the statutory filing deadline so the county could process the change for tax year 2026. The ordinance identifier given in the meeting was recorded as "20 20 six-thirty 2."
