"This morning, shortly before 07:30, we received a call for a natural gas leak... we immediately contacted Atmos Energy and started evacuation of the neighbors," the chief said, describing a shutdown that affected Broadway and nearby blocks.
Atmos crews capped lines to isolate the leak and planned to repressurize the system in increments, with technicians turning meters back on individually once crews confirm safe readings. The chief said the shutdown affected three major Broadway restaurants and that the town had told affected businesses how to file claims for lost revenue through Atmos Energy's website. Council members thanked first responders and public works crews for their on-scene traffic control and safety work.
Town staff said residents’ in-home gas meters registered zero on checks, indicating the leak was underground. Officials said the immediate risk to downtown had passed and that Atmos crews would continue digging and testing in roughly 100- to 150-foot increments to locate the leak. The council emphasized communications with affected businesses and residents while repairs continued.
