Omar highlighted recent adoption events, a two-week adoption effort that produced 12 adoptions, partnerships with rescue organizations that transported animals out of state, and four owner-surrender denials for the month.
"We did have a total of a 120 intakes for the month of May," Omar said, and he described outreach and volunteer activities (Happy Tails 4-H, student volunteers) that helped prepare animals for adoption. Council members praised staff work, urged continued adoption events and volunteer support, and noted that the proposed increase in owner-surrender fees could reduce nonessential surrenders but might also incentivize abandonment if not paired with outreach. Staff committed to bringing a fuller shelter policy discussion to a future meeting.
Council closed the workshop by thanking Omar and shelter volunteers and emphasizing the need to maintain adoption and volunteer programs to address shelter overcrowding.
