Council hears revenue scenarios: $1.57M at $25 to $6.43M at $80 in countywide examples
Summary
At the July 29 workshop the state representative and staff ran through revenue scenarios for different wheel-tax rates, including an $80-per-vehicle maximum example yielding about $6.43 million and a $25 example yielding roughly $1.57 million for La Porte County (estimates depend on city carve-outs).

Council members asked for concrete revenue examples; Representative Pressel and staff presented several rate scenarios to show the scale of revenue a wheel tax could raise.
Pressel provided a maximum example: "At max, you would be $6,426,850 potentially," he said when describing an $80-per-vehicle scenario and cautioned that members should not assume the county should set the maximum. He also referenced a $25-per-vehicle illustration that would produce an estimated $1,570,000 in his spreadsheet review.
Council members and staff noted the estimates depend on which municipalities adopt their own wheel taxes (cities that have their own wheel tax may be carved out of county collections) and on final auditor calculations. Members directed staff to prepare formal revenue projections at different rate points before any public hearing so the council can weigh tradeoffs between grant eligibility, lane-mile distributions and direct wheel-tax receipts.
