Several residents and two written letters addressed the council during consideration of the finance director appointment, urging more transparent hiring practices and council involvement in candidate interviews.
Travis Decker asked whether council members had been given an opportunity to interview Michael Lee and whether they knew "what ideas he brings to the table" to address the city's financial shortfall, saying he had not received responses from some council members. The clerk read a letter from Brenda Case that said "failing to hire and retain a qualified financial professional is not a reasonable response" and urged the council to hire the found candidate and investigate why finance professionals have not stayed in prior roles.
Resident Brian Morgan told the council that raises cited in the discussion were approved by council action, not by the finance director, and urged the council to structure interviews if they wish to participate in hiring decisions. Colleen Decker said voters expect their elected council members to be able to ask candidates questions: "If I was hiring someone for mowing my lawn, I would wanna ask them questions. I don't see why that is... why we don't want the council to be able to ask them." Katie Howard criticized the agenda for not clearly indicating public comment availability and recommended more transparent selection procedures.
Ending: The council heard these comments prior to debate and ultimately approved the appointment; several council members acknowledged the public input and indicated plans for further internal review of policy and compensation steps.
