District honors summer lifeguards after busy season at SCV 35 Aquatic Center

The Santa Cruz Valley Unified School District recognized its summer lifeguard team during the board meeting on July 28, thanking staff and student lifeguards for safety and instruction across a busy season. The aquatics presentation noted the program included 25 Rio Rico high school students and one student from the Nogales Unified School District and that the district works with county partners to fund the program.
"Throughout this season, these young men and women have demonstrated exceptional teamwork, leadership, professionalism, and dedication," the program presenter said, thanking the governing board for supporting aquatic programming. The presenter told the board the pool drew more than 2,000 visitors this summer and that roughly 530 students participated in swim lessons, an increase from the previous year.
Several student lifeguards introduced themselves and said the role provided leadership and first-responder experience. Board members praised the staff and volunteers, with Alma de la Riva saying the lifeguards provide "responsible individuals…looking out after our kids" during hot summer days. The board took a group photograph and formally thanked aquatics staff for coordinating certificates of recognition.
