Council awards $3.04 million Trujune Road Safe Streets project to extend sidewalks and add traffic calming

The Princeton Mayor and Council approved a construction contract with BlackRock Enterprises LLC for Trujune Road Safe Streets to Transit pedestrian improvements in an amount not to exceed $3,039,948.55. The project will replace and extend sidewalks on Terhune/Trujune Road between Mount Lucas and North Harrison Street, install three raised intersections at Jefferson, Dempsey and Walnut for traffic calming, and use pervious concrete with sub‑base stone for water-quality treatment.

Municipal staff said the project has partial funding from a $1,000,000 Safe Routes to Transit grant because a New Jersey Transit bus line runs along the corridor. Staff emphasized care to preserve a line of mature London plane trees, laying out sidewalks as far from root systems as possible and performing health assessments to replace only trees in decline. "So that corridor...has a lot of large London plane trees...a lot of care was taken in laying out the location of the sidewalks to be as far away from those existing trees as possible," staff said.

The council approved the resolution after discussion of design details, tree protection, and the benefits to students, pedestrians and neighborhood connectivity. Construction funding, schedule and contractor oversight will follow municipal procurement practices referenced in the authorization (Resolution 26-218).
