Madison Youth Unlimited seeks county support for family kitchen series to teach healthy cooking

Sarah Wines, volunteer and board member for Madison Youth Unlimited, presented the Madison Community Grocery Project, a proposal for a four‑week family kitchen series to teach basic cooking and nutrition skills using fresh, local produce. Wines said the pilot program reached students in Madison schools and that the new series would run four cohorts and reach at least 50 families (about 100 children).
The project requests county support for staffing (a chef educator), cooking and serving supplies, ingredients and groceries for participant homework. Wines said the program will use federal SNAP guidance and adapt materials for local needs and partner with the Farm Stop and local chefs. "Participants will practice cooking skills and learn the basics of healthy nutrition," she said, and added program staff expect the class work and food homework to ripple out into family and community eating habits.
Council members asked about organization history and capacity; Wines said Madison Youth Unlimited is an iteration of a two‑decade nonprofit and highlighted prior projects such as a skate park and Farm Stop partnerships. Presenters asked the county to consider the program when allocating community support funds.
