Sunnyvale fire chief urges staffing and records work to protect ISO rating and lower insurance costs

Fire Chief Albright presented the fire department’s FY27 budget priorities and an ISO evaluation that the department commissioned. "This is from the findings of 2024... to obtain ISO 2 rating I need a 2nd engine company, Quint Staff, Rescue Mini Pumper," Chief Albright told council, and he stressed that improved record management, hydrant inspection and company drills are essential. He recommended hiring an assistant chief for operations to supervise training and regulatory programs and requested funding for field training officer pay and replacement patient‑handling equipment. Chief Albright said some requirements can be met through agreements—he noted a Mesquite training field agreement—and some steps are internal (record systems and documentation).
Council asked for a progress update and Chief Albright agreed to return in October with a self‑assessment of progress on the items the consultant identified. He also described potential insurance premium impacts tied to ISO changes and framed staffing as both an operational and risk‑management issue.
