Representatives of three churches urged a taller, wood fence: Russell Shaw, facilities director at Sunnyvale 1st Baptist Church, said, “A wood panel fence that’s 8 feet high would discourage climbing and lower that ability,” citing liability and the risk of spectators parking on church property. Staff advised the commission that there is no zoning precedent requiring a private developer to install a particular screening fence and noted a future trail alignment from the mobility master plan limits how far a fence could extend.
The commission approved Case 1874PD with the fence question postponed; the transcript records the chair saying, “No final decision tonight on the fence.” The deferred item will be presented to Town Council after the developer and property owners attempt to reach an agreed solution.
