Council approves police communications console purchase to capture vendor price break

The Chief of Police told the council the vendor includes a scheduled price increase on Sept. 16 that would raise the cost of replacement consoles from the pre-increase level of about $508,000 to as much as $800,000. Staff identified a trade-in rebate for old equipment of about $120,000, which yields a pre-increase purchase price of roughly $388,714 if ordered before the Sept. 16 increase.
The chief explained that consoles are reaching end of life (current consoles are expected to be obsolete by 2030) and that replacing them sooner could avoid the higher cost and preserve interoperability and patching support. Council members supported the purchase; a motion to approve procurement as presented passed by voice vote. Staff noted logistics will include planning for a temporary dispatch location or use of a 9-1-1 trailer during the equipment transition.
