Animal-shelter adds pre-adoption testing, heartworm screening funded by recycling program

Trish, speaking for the animal shelter, told commissioners that revenue from aluminum recycling and other fundraising now allows the shelter to add pre-adoption health testing to adoption packages.
"We're now gonna be bringing in, snap test for cats to test everybody for feline leukemia and for FIV prior to being adopted," Trish said, adding the shelter will also start routine heartworm testing for dogs and that the testing will be included in the adoption package. She described steady income from recycling that supports offering those services.
The move is intended to improve adoption outcomes and reduce returns by ensuring adopters know the health status of animals when they leave the shelter. Commissioners acknowledged the update and had no further questions at that time.
