Avon council presentation recommends organic field pilot and drainage fixes at school and town sites

Consultants told the Avon Town Council that several Avon fields — notably at Thompson Brook School and Buckingham Road Recreation Area — underperform because of drainage issues and should be renovated to increase usable inventory. Emily Weckman said the plan calls for subsurface evaluations, revised field cross-sections and consideration of irrigation where an organic management pilot is pursued.
Ryan Chmielewski said the consultants identified Buckingham Road Recreation Area as a priority site and recommended piloting organic management at school sites including Avon Middle School and Thompson Brook School. Chmielewski cautioned that implementing an organic protocol at a municipal level would take years and that irrigation is a key component for maintaining high-performing fields.
