Sperry Park girls’ softball field advances after $200K state grant and $150K Little League pledge

Assistant Town Manager summarized a cost estimate and a funding plan for a new girls’ softball field at Sperry Park, saying the work can begin in stages with Public Works performing much of the initial site preparation. The state has awarded a $200,000 Recreational Trails grant earmarked to start improvements, and Avon Little League has signed a letter of intent committing $150,000 with plans to continue fundraising.
"The League has signed a letter of intent, and the $150,000 is available at any time going forward to help fund the project," Mark Massaro of Avon Little League said. Avon Little League representatives said the program has grown to more than 100 girls and that a home field at Sperry Park would consolidate programs now split across town fields and provide a venue for high-school games and tournaments.
Staff said if Little League contributes only $150,000 and the town uses the $200,000 grant, the remaining Town cost to fully fund the current estimate would be about $530,000; the Assistant Town Manager said staff would refine numbers for the Town Manager’s FY26 capital request and seek a supplemental appropriation to accept and move forward with the $200,000 state grant at a special meeting on Sept. 11. Council gave consensus to continue with the project and directed staff to refine costs and present funding options.
