Avon council hears Recreation & Parks Master Plan update; consultants recommend NRPA review and shared maintenance

Avon Town Council on Oct. 22 heard a presentation from Weston & Sampson on an updated Recreation & Parks Master Plan that the consultants described as "a living document and a tool for the future." Ryan Chmielewski, team leader for the firm, reviewed project goals, timelines and an inventory of town and school recreation facilities and encouraged the council to use the plan to guide future capital decisions.
Emily Weckman, the project manager, said the plan identifies short-, medium- and long-term action items and recommends an NRPA (National Recreation and Park Association) performance agency review and a shared maintenance program to align town and Board of Education facility standards. The presentation materials listed outreach including an online survey and public meetings; the slide deck shows 620 survey participants during the outreach phase.
Council members asked about prioritization, scheduling and program capacity. Recreation & Parks Committee Chair Bob Yass urged councilors to engage the broader community in refining the report’s specifics, saying "the test now will be what is the reaction of the broader community to the specifics that are outlined in the report." Director of Recreation & Parks Jen Filer noted the department uses MyRec software for department registrations and reservations.
The consultants and council agreed the draft will be posted for public review and comment before Weston & Sampson finalizes the plan and returns to the council with revised recommendations.
