IT director urges council to fund a disaster-recovery plan; proposes cloud options to trim cost

The city's IT director presented a multi-part capital request that includes a proposed disaster-recovery capability, citywide wireless access-point replacement, data-center UPS battery replacement, and a tech-refresh for mobile devices. He said prior scoping produced a high estimate to build a remote data-center replica but that cloud-based replication and refined scoping could reduce that figure.
"That is an estimate... with the advancement in cloud compute availability and other things, we're starting to look in at some of that that might wind up saving us some money off of this dollar figure," the IT director (speaker 16) said. Council members recommended trimming $110,500 from the highest estimate and requested a revised proposal that assumes more cloud services and gives a lower starting figure (roughly $439,500) for initial authorization. The director agreed to refine the scope and return a prioritized implementation plan.
