Council debates police training budget; councilors press for compromise at $70,000

Councilor (speaker 6) pressed whether reduced dollars would still meet mandatory recertification and whether school-specific training from the district would reduce city costs; the chief said school-specific training is paid by the district only when it is exclusively for school officers. Finance confirmed FY25 combined spending (general fund + restricted funds) on police training was about $49,007.45 and reported $32,701 remained in the current general-fund training allocation. After discussion council members suggested a compromise of $70,000 for recurring police training and moving one-time recovery costs to fund balance.
