Council member Mike Mayo used his report to inform colleagues that the Urban Mission had announced closures of its local mission sites, with the last day slated for Oct. 31, and expressed concern for residents who rely on those services.
"The urban mission announced the other day they're closing all the missions... The last day is October 31st so they're going to close that one," Mayo told council and said he was concerned about where people will go. Mayo also questioned what happened to previously awarded Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, saying the city provided $70,000 for repairs on local shelters and asking whether the funds had been used consistent with program requirements.
City staff did not provide immediate detail on the Urban Mission’s decision or the disposition of CDBG dollars; Mayo asked staff to look into how long shelters had been closed and how city funds were used. Council agreed to request additional information and follow up through staff and the appropriate departments.
Next steps: staff will review the Urban Mission’s closure timeline and the city’s CDBG grant records and report back to council.
