Council certifies closed session compliance under Virginia code and ends closed-session portion
Summary
After reconvening from closed session on May 19, the Petersburg City Council voted to certify that the closed-session topics had been discussed as called and asked members to state any departures; the presiding officer announced the certification motion carried and closed the session.
After returning from closed session, a staff member asked the council to entertain a motion to conclude the closed session and to certify “in accordance with” the applicable Virginia statute that the matters for which the closed session was called had been discussed, and to allow any member who believed there had been a departure from the closed-session topics to state the substance of that departure for the record.
Vice Mayor Hill moved to certify the closed session; Council member Jones seconded the motion. The clerk called the roll and members responded; the presiding officer announced that the motion carried. The presiding officer then stated, “That concludes our closed session,” bringing the closed-session portion of the meeting to an end.
