The Lansing City Council voted to set a public hearing on August 10 for Brownfield Plan Number 91, a 15‑year proposal to redevelop approximately 5.74 acres at 6420 South Cedar Street (the former University Motor Mall property).
Councilmember Garza told the council that Phase 1 of the project has already produced about $2,000,000 in private investment, including construction of a Chick‑fil‑A, and that remaining acreage is being marketed for additional commercial and retail development. Staff and the developer said the site redevelopment would include environmental cleanup, demolition, asbestos and lead abatement, site preparation and infrastructure improvements. Garza said the project could create roughly 80 full‑time jobs with an estimated average wage of about $15 per hour once fully developed.
The item was referred to committee and set for public hearing on August 10 so that the public may review details and comment on the proposed brownfield plan.
