Overland Park proclaims Arbor Day as city forester highlights urban forest work

The Overland Park City Council read an Arbor Day proclamation April 20 and urged residents to support the city's urban forestry program.
Councilmember Beck read the proclamation and noted Overland Park's recognition as a Tree City USA community. "Now, therefore, I, Kurt Schoog, mayor of the city of Overland Park, Kansas, do hereby proclaim 04/20/2026 as Arbor Day in Overland Park and encourage all residents to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands," the proclamation recited.
Laura Peterson, the city forester, said the Arbor Day proclamation is among the elements the city uses to maintain its Tree City USA designation and highlighted recent achievements: "In 2025, the community and city staff accomplished many significant projects which helped us maintain our Tree City designation...They gave away more than 1,800 tree and shrubs seedlings just a couple weeks ago to celebrate Arbor Day." Peterson said the city hopes to adopt an Urban Forest Plan and will present the State of the Urban Forest during committee meetings and through public education outreach this year.
