Akron committee recommends $512,468 in Emergency Solutions Grant funding for eight local homeless services programs

Helen Tomic told the Planning & Economic Development Committee that the city of Akron will receive approximately $512,000 for the 2026 Emergency Solutions Grant program from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. An RFP produced nine applications requesting about $587,000; after review staff recommended funding eight applications for a total of $512,468.
"After review, we are recommending that 8 applications receive funding, in the total of $512,468," Helen Tomic said, and described intended targets including youth, single women, women with children, single-parent families and two-parent families. The applications, she said, came through the continuum of care process and staff assessed requests by what was asked, each agency's capacity, whether agencies already received continuum-of-care funding, the number of people served and the amount of available dollars.
Councilman Hannah asked how award amounts were determined; Tomic said some agencies received their full requested amount, others were adjusted based on capacity and available funds. She confirmed the Harmony House award would be $10,000. The committee voted to suspend the rules and give a favorable report so the package can move to full council this evening.
