Cohasset students present PFAS sampling, ask Board to review letter to state health department

Students from the Cohasset Center for Student Coastal Research (CSCR) presented PFAS sampling results for local water bodies and foam samples and requested municipal review and support for a planned letter to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Jack Buckley (CSCR advisor) introduced students Katie Kenealy (Cohasset High School) and Elsie Vijjeswarapu (Archbishop Williams High School), who described their sampling at Hunter's Pond, Bound Brook and Cohasset Harbor using CycloPure test kits.
The students told the Board that foam samples contained higher concentrations of long-chain PFAS compared with corresponding water samples and reported some saltwater foam readings exceeding 20 parts per trillion. The Board praised the students' work and agreed to review their draft letter at the May meeting; members indicated they could provide municipal support for outreach to DPH. The minutes note that the students have coordinated with an Andrew from Nantucket's Board of Health, which has already approved a collaboration.
