Molly Malone: middle-school innovations class awarded $2,500 SETSEG grant

Molly Malone told the board the innovations class recently received a $2,500 SETSEG education-excellence grant to support an eight-station, student-centered STEM program for 7th and 8th graders.
“We recently got a grant for 2,500,” Molly Malone said, and described stations that rotate students through robotics, 3-D printing, virtual reality, Cricut design, Snap Circuits and Bloxels game design, a construction corner, Soundtrap podcasting and an open makerspace. Malone said students use the 3-D printers to create assistive devices and that the classroom partners with Makers Making Change to adapt files for device fabrication.
Board members praised the class’s hands-on approach and rising enrollment; the superintendent and other members noted the course complements elementary robotics and provides exposure to coding that feeds into other computer-science options. The presentation highlighted booster support for equipment and a recent booster-funded purchase of chop saws for the makerspace.
The board did not take action on the presentation itself; staff noted community members and other teachers may visit the innovations classroom and that the district will continue supporting the elective through booster and building resources.
