The Boyne City Public Schools board voted to authorize staff to develop ballot language for a capital-improvement bond not to exceed $24,000,000 for voters to consider in May 2025. The board's final decision on the bond package and exact ballot wording is set for December, with the election scheduled in May.
Staff told the board this was the third presentation of the bond concepts and that drafting ballot language now would allow members to review technical documents at the December meeting. "December is the actual vote, but what tonight would allow us to do is to have ballot language drafted to get some of the technical pieces out of the way so you can review that in December as well," a staff member said. Board discussion focused on balancing immediate building needs, CTE priorities and community appetite for athletics-related projects.
Board members debated three paths, including a smaller-dollar motion that failed to receive a second and a broader option (Option B) that included turf and an athletic complex. After discussion, the board approved Option A — the needs-focused package that includes an elementary addition — with a voice vote. The chair summarized the authorization as allowing staff and counsel to prepare documents and reiterated the $24,000,000 cap.
Next steps: staff will refine cost estimates and ballot text with consultants; the board will review and must adopt final language at the December meeting before election materials are finalized.
